There are many great reasons why people give to charity. Not only are you helping others in need that are less fortunate then you, making them feel good, but helping others makes you feel good too. Unfortunately, when the economy isn’t doing well, charitable donates are one of the first things to suffer. What many people overlook is that you don’t have to spend money to give to a charity; there are other things to donate.
One of the most precious things a person can give is time. When you can not afford to give monetary donations to a charity, consider donating your time instead. Become a volunteer at your local soup kitchen, shelter, or hospital. There are many different facilities that welcome volunteers, and some places completely run on volunteers and their donated time. You can donate an hour of your time, an entire day, or even a week. Just think about how you’d like to help others. You could serve food at a soup kitchen, you could help out in a shelter, you could be there to assist people in a drug rehabilitation center, or you can even escort patients around a confusing hospital. You really are limited only by your own creativity when looking to donate your time to others in need.
Another great way to donate without spending a dime is to donate lightly used items. There is always a great need for blankets and pillows at animal shelters and they would welcome your donations with open arms, or paws. You can donate the toys your kids outgrew to a shelter, orphanage, Good Will or the Salvation Army. You can donate your used, but in great condition, clothes and coats to shelters, the Salvation Army or other similar groups.
Ask your local churches and schools to find out what places in your area need your help. You can also contact any shelters, rehabs, or hospitals to find out about their volunteering programs. Donating your time, instead of money, is a more personal experience that often changes a person for the better.
