Deployment is a tough part of life for military children to cope with. As a parent, it’s important that you provide your kids with the support necessary, so that they remain emotionally and mentally balanced during the time of the other parent’s deployment. The parent is the foundation of the household, so it’s up to you to offer assurance to your kids.

1. Make sure that you are well supported in the situation. It may be tough to handle a spouse’s deployment. In order for your kids to remain strong, you must have the strength within yourself to handle the situation. Do this by building a strong support system of family members and friends who are going through a similar situation as yourself. Also, become aware and reflect upon your own feelings. Make sure to look at the positive as much as possible. The way you feel can truly effect the way your children feel.

2. Keep your kids involved in their school and activities. Though they will certainly not forget the deployed parent, it’s important for kids to take the time and cultivate themselves.

3. Make it so that you and your kids keep in touch with the deployed parent. The deployed parent can typically communicate online. Otherwise, kids can send emails, letters, pictures and gifts. Allow your kids to send love and gratitude to the deployed parent in a creative way. This doesn’t only benefit your kids, it also benefits the parent overseas.

4. Talk to your kids. Constantly communicate with your kids about how they feel about the entire situation. It’s important for kids to release their feelings. If they’re having any problems about the deployment, then seek out ways to find solutions. This is a great way for your kids to also build character in such an uncertain situation.
