Military families often move from one location to the next. Such obligations can be straining for the entire family. However, there are many advantages to moving frequently. Your children will cultivate a diverse outlook, especially if international moving is involved. This opportunity can be a great way to develop a cultured and open-minded child. How can a military family handle moving to a totally different locale?
Explain the Facts
Explain to your kids that moving is necessary for mommy or daddy’s job. Tell them that mommy or daddy’s job helps provide food and other important things into the lives of every member in the family. Agree that moving can be tough, but explain that "we" can get through it. Use the word "we" a lot to make the family sound like a team that is in it together.
Talk about Feelings
Ask them how they feel about moving. Some problems may include losing friendships, having to make new friends and wishing that they could stay at one place like other kids. Find solutions to their problems. Talk about the advantages of moving around, such as seeing new and exciting places. Explain to them that they can still keep in touch with old friends through the internet. If your kids are having problems making friends, explore what the issue is. Perhaps, you can even offer helpful advice in socializing with other people and making friends.
Have Strength in the Family
It’s important that the family core remains strong, especially during frequent moves. Achieve this by providing emotional and mental support for your children. Communication is key when building strength in the family. Also, acting as a role model to your family is important. As long as you remain strong, your children may follow your good example. Remember, you are an important example for your family and children can be excellent mimics.
