Many Americans want to support the troops. After all, the troops are responsible for protecting the country and its people. Typically, an American citizen knows a friend or family member past or present who has served our country. There are various ways to contribute to the troops, from sending off care packages to donating money to a military charity. Numerous military charities exist to accept donations. However, like any company or  organization you plan on handing your money to, it’s important to make sure that your money will reach its proper destination. Here are some tips to make sure that your donations make it into the right hands.

Check whether the organization is legitimate
Not all military charities are legitimate. Some real military charities take large fees from your donation leaving very little to the intended recipients. Find the office that regulates charities. Ask them for a list of legitimate list of non-profit organizations geared toward military donations. Keep in mind that instant charities pop up overnight whenever the military makes an impact on the news.

Research online
Learn to do a little research. Though this may take a little bit of time, you’ll know exactly where your money is going. Look for the organization’s history. You can usually do a quick online search to dig up the necessary dirt. There are many websites that offer reviews on charitable organizations. You can also hunt for the organization’s records.

Ask the organization where the money goes
By simply asking, you may get a real answer. Find out how much in fees are deducted from the donation. Every organization will require processing fees and other costs to pay employees. However, make sure that these fees are reasonable. Also, ask the exact percentage goes to the troops. Become well-informed by learning about how your donation will be split between the organization and the troops themselves.
